Hard Palate Vyanjanas - Cha Varga

Lesson 12

In the last class, we began the study of the second set of Vyanjanas or Consonants. These belong to the Cha (च) Varga. Cha (च) Varga consonants are pronouced using the hard palate or the bony top region at the back of the mouth. If you recall the diagram of the mouth from an earlier lesson (for your benefit, I am reproducing it again below), the sounds of the alphabets belonging to this class of vyanjanas are sounded from the spot indicated by the orange dot in the picture below.

Click on the words to get the links to the sound bytes on their pronunciation  and . Remember, like the sounds of क and ख from the first varga, च and छ  sounds are not voiced. The छ sound is made by forming the sound of च and emphasizing it with the addition of an extra puff of air at the end.

Homework:
  • Write the letters च and छ  with the14 maatras at least 10 times each. Please remember to pronounce the words while writing.
